Early Career and Revolutionary TechniquePietro Campelli, a pioneering Italian footballer, made his debut for Internazionale at the age of 16, becoming the club's youngest-ever goalkeeper. In his first match against Milanese on January 30, 1910, he conceded two goals but displayed his revolutionary technique: catching the ball instead of parrying it. This approach, previously unheard of in Italian football, would become his defining trait.
Dominance with Inter and Impact on the National Team
Campelli's 25-year tenure with Internazionale was interrupted by World War I, which suspended the Italian championship for five years. However, upon its resumption, Inter emerged victorious with Campelli guarding their goal. He also made significant contributions to the Italian national team, debuting at the 1912 Olympics and earning seven caps.
His performance against France in 1915 was particularly notable, where his exceptional skill prevented a heavy defeat for Italy. Campelli also participated in the 1920 Olympics, where Italy defeated Egypt before losing to France. His final international appearance came in a 3-2 victory over Belgium.
Retirement and Legacy
Campelli played his last match for Inter on November 9, 1924, against Pisa.
