Early Life and EducationPierre Jean George Cabanis was born on June 5, 1757, in Cosnac, France. He initially pursued a career in medicine, studying under the renowned Étienne Bonnot de Condillac.
Political Affiliations and French Revolution
Cabanis held political beliefs aligned with the Girondins. He became close friends with Jean-Baptiste Mirabeau and Marie-Jean Condorcet. During the French Revolution, he played a significant role in reorganizing medical schools.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1803, Cabanis was elected to the French Academy of Sciences. He passed away on May 5, 1808, and was buried in the Panthéon in Paris. His friend and colleague, Antoine Destutt de Tracy, succeeded him in the Academy.
Philosophical Beliefs
Materialism and AtheismCabanis adhered to materialistic and atheistic principles, but he did not espouse them as rigorously as earlier generations of French materialists. He contended that thinking was a product of the brain, similar to secretions from other organs.
