Jacques de Cailly
Life and ConversionJacques de Cailly was a French historian and theologian. Born into a Protestant family, he served as a minister for some time. However, he later converted to Catholicism, a decision that aroused controversy.
Historical Works
Cailly made significant contributions to French history through his writings. He documented the civil wars that occurred between 1589 and 1604 in two major publications:
- Chronologie septennaire, ou Histoire de la paix depuis 1598 jusqu'en 1604:This work chronicled the period following the Edict of Nantes in 1598.
- Chronologie novennaire depuis 1589 jusqu'à la paix de Vervins en 1598:This nine-volume work covered the events leading up to the Peace of Vervins, marking the end of the Franco-Spanish War.
Accusations and Controversy
Cailly's conversion to Catholicism drew criticism from his former Protestant colleagues. They accused him of defending brothels and of selling his soul to the devil, particularly in connection with his 1603 translation of the "Faustbuch."
