Biography of Pierre-Yves Artaud

Pierre-Yves Artaud is a French flutist, composer, and pedagogue. He was born on July 13, 1946, in Paris, France. Artaud is currently a professor of flute and chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire and the École Normale de Musique de Paris. He also conducts numerous masterclasses in Europe and Asia, including Japan.

Career

Artaud's career spans three main areas: as a performing flutist, a researcher, and a music teacher. He has established himself as a prominent concert flutist, having collaborated with renowned orchestras worldwide under the baton of conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Jean-Claude Casadesus, and Charles Dutoit.

In 1965, Artaud founded the "Quatuor de flûtes Arcadie," a flute quartet, and in 1985, he established the "Orchestre français de flûtes," an orchestra consisting of flutists. He was also a long-time soloist and artistic director of the musical ensemble "Ensemble 2e2m" from 1994 to 1997.

Artaud's expertise extends beyond performing. In 1981, he was invited by Pierre Boulez to lead the "Atelier de recherche instrumentale" at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM), an institute dedicated to research and coordination of acoustics and music. He served as the director of the workshop until 1986.

Contributions to Contemporary Music

Pierre-Yves Artaud is known for his interpretation of contemporary composers who write for the flute. His repertoire includes works by Gilbert Amy, André Boucourechliev, Franco Donatoni, Klaus Huber, Brian Ferneyhough, Sofia Gubaidulina, Betsy Jolas, Michaël Levinas, Paul Mefano, Emmanuel Nunes, Luis de Pablo, and Yoshihisa Taira.

Teaching and Publications

In addition to his performing career, Artaud is a professor of flute and chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire and the École Normale de Musique de Paris. He also conducts numerous masterclasses both in Europe and Asia, including Japan.

Artaud has authored several pedagogical works, including "Flûtes au Présent" ("Contemporary Flute"), which delves into modern instrumental techniques. He also teaches a course on teaching methodology at the Paris Conservatoire.

Awards and Recognition

Pierre-Yves Artaud has received numerous prestigious musical awards and honors throughout his career. He is a three-time laureate of the "Académie Charles-Cros" award and the recipient of the Grand Prix for performers of contemporary French music awarded by the Society of Authors, Composers, and Publishers of Music. In 2000, Bucharest University conferred upon him an honorary doctorate.
