Van der Aa played a pivotal role in disseminating the work of Nicolaas Witsen, a Dutch explorer and cartographer. He published Witsen's drawings as engravings in Adam Olearius's "Description of a Journey to Muscovy." Among these was the iconic "City of Moscow, Capital of Muscovy."
