Pietro Bernini

Early Life and Career

Pietro Bernini, the renowned Italian sculptor, hailed from Sesto Fiorentino, Tuscany. He relocated to Naples to work on the Certosa di San Martino monastery (now a museum). It was in Naples that his illustrious son, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, was born in 1598.

Papal Commissions

In 1605, the family relocated to Rome under the patronage of Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Here, Pietro Berni worked on prestigious projects for Pope Paul V and other Borghese family members. Notably, he designed the Cappella Paolina within the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

Fountain Barcaccia

One of Pietro Bernini's most iconic contributions to Rome is the Fontana Barcaccia (Fountain of the Half-Sunken Boat). Located at the foot of the Spanish Steps, this fountain resembling a partially submerged vessel was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII and completed in 1627.
