Primoz Roglic: From Ski Jumping to Grand Tour Glory
Early Life and Ski Jumping CareerPrimoz Roglic, a Slovenian professional road cyclist, was born on October 29, 1989. His journey to cycling fame began as a ski jumper. In his youth, Roglic achieved notable success, winning the silver medal at the 2006 Youth World Championships and the gold medal in the team event at the 2007 Youth World Championships. However, a severe fall in 2007 on the Planica ski jump put an end to his ski jumping career.
Transition to Road Cycling
In 2013, Roglic recognized that his aspirations of becoming an elite ski jumper would remain unfulfilled. He made the bold decision to pursue road cycling, signing a contract with the Slovenian professional continental team Adria Mobil. His debut season was promising, as he secured his first professional victory on a stage of the Tour of Azerbaijan and triumphed in the Croatia-Slovenia one-day race.
Breakthrough with Team Jumbo-Visma
In 2015, Roglic's impressive performances earned him a contract with the Dutch World Tour team Team Jumbo-Visma. He quickly made an impact, finishing second behind Tom Dumoulin on the opening stage of the 2016 Giro d'Italia and winning stage 9, a 40.5km individual time trial. These results propelled him to his first Slovenian national time trial championship.
