At the age of 6, following her father's advice, Priya started learning to swim in a small backyard pool, using inflatable cushions to stay afloat. Her passion for swimming was discovered by her school teacher, who informed her about special swimming competitions for athletes with disabilities. From that moment on, Priya dreamt of participating in tournaments.

Paralympic Success

At the age of 12, Priya caught the attention of the national team coach during the national championships, where she won 12 gold medals and set several records. She made her Paralympic debut in 1992 at the Summer Paralympics in Barcelona. In her first race, she won a gold medal and went on to earn four more medals, including two gold and two silver. She also set two world records and three Paralympic records.

In the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Priya was the vice-captain of the Australian swimming team. However, her outstanding performance outshone the entire team as she won five gold medals, one silver, and one bronze. She set numerous world records, Paralympic records, and even beat her personal best time in one of the races.

In 2000, Priya dedicated herself to the preparation for the Paralympic Games held in Sydney. She sacrificed months of training to help train volunteers and prepare the facilities. Despite focusing more on assisting other athletes, Priya still managed to win a gold medal and three bronze medals in her own races.

Life After Sports

After retiring from professional sports, Priya Cooper unexpectedly decided to challenge her fear of swimming in open water. She completed the Rottnest Channel Swim, a 12-kilometer distance in open water, as a way to conquer her fear.

Following her swimming career, Priya Cooper became a sports commentator. She is married and has two children. While she held the record for the most medals won for a long time, it was eventually surpassed by the young Australian swimmer Matthew Cowdrey, who has won 23 Paralympic medals to date.
