Early Life and Education
Born in Green, Ohio, Aja Monet Cargill was raised by her mother, who suffered from polio. Her father passed away when she was young. Cargill and her mother lived in a Section 8 home in an affluent suburb, which she credits for making her aware of the economic disparity between herself and her white peers.
Activism and Advocacy
In 2017, a photograph of Cargill and a friend holding signs at the Women's March went viral. Cargill's sign read, "If you're not fighting for all women, you're not fighting for any women." She subsequently became more vocal about feminist issues and gave several university lectures with her popular series, "Unpacking White Feminism." Cargill strives to promote intersectionality in her activism and work.
The Loveland Foundation
Following a GoFundMe campaign, Cargill founded the Loveland Foundation, which aims to expand access to therapy for Black women and girls. Cargill has been critical of what she sees as the commodification of wellness.
Education and Literary Pursuits
In 2019, Cargill studied at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research and with Imani Perry at Princeton University. In 2020, she opened Elizabeth's Bookshop & Writing Center in Akron, Ohio. She has signed a book deal with Dial Press, but no publication date has been announced as of 2022.
