Early Life and InspirationsRaf Simons, the enigmatic Creative Director of Jil Sander, remains unbothered by the glamorous side of fashion, yet his creations have amassed a devoted following. Born in a humble town into a family with no fashion ties, Simons's passion for art emerged at a young age.
Entry into Fashion
After completing his industrial design studies, Simons stumbled upon fashion in Belgium during the 1980s, a time marked by the rise of Martin Margiela and Dries Van Noten. Encouraged by Linda Loppa, Dean of the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Simons launched his own label.
Jil Sander Renaissance
In 2005, Simons took the helm at Jil Sander, a brand that had lost its footing. With his first collection, he infused the brand with new fabrics, colors, and sewing techniques, while preserving its signature minimalist aesthetic. Inspired by Jil Sander's own work, Simons sought to create garments that evoked the fluidity and sensuality of the female form.
Artistic Experimentation
Simons's designs draw heavily from contemporary art. From the sculptural dresses that echo the body's contours to the textured pleats, his creations reflect his intellectual curiosity and passion for art. Despite his reluctance to discuss the future, Simons plans to introduce a new line of accessories for Jil Sander, including sharp-toed shoes and exotic leather boots. He also expresses a desire to visit Russia and explore its art scene, specifically the work of Oleg Kulik.
