Early Life and Education

Rafiga Aliyeva was born in Nakhichevan, Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. The sister of prominent Soviet and Azerbaijani statesman Heydar Aliyev, she graduated from the chemistry department of Azerbaijan State University in 1956.

Academic and Research Career

Aliyeva joined the Institute of Chemical Problems of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences in 1958. She completed her postgraduate studies at Baku State University from 1960 to 1963 and earned her Candidate of Sciences degree in 1970. In 1999, she defended her doctoral dissertation to become a Doctor of Chemical Sciences.

From 1960 to 2001, Aliyeva worked at Baku State University as an assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, and professor. In 2001, she became the head of the laboratory for Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Protection. She was awarded the title of Professor in 1999.

Aliyeva was elected a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) in 2007 and a full member in 2014.

Scientific Contributions

Aliyeva's research focused on the development of photometric methods for determining and applying metals in complex systems, as well as the use of organic reagents. Her lab's primary focus was on analyzing harmful substances in natural and industrial environments, determining metals using organic reagents, and developing separation methods.

Authorship and Accomplishments

Aliyeva was the author of over 450 scientific publications, 25 textbooks and teaching aids, and 20 patents. She was a member of numerous scientific councils and societies. Under her guidance, over 20 individuals earned PhDs.

Awards and Recognition

Aliyeva received the Order of Shohrat, Azerbaijan's highest award, for her contributions to science and education. Her scientific and practical achievements were recognized with the following honors:
