Biography of Rahmi Koç

Rahmi Koç, a Turkish business magnate and renowned philanthropist, was born in 1930 in Ankara. He was the son of the wealthiest man in Turkey, which ensured he never faced any significant challenges.

Education and Career

Koç studied in Ankara before attending Robert College in Istanbul. He later pursued his education at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, where he earned an honorary bachelor's degree in industrial management. After serving in the military for a period of time, Koç joined Koc Group in 1958. Two years later, he transitioned to Koc Ticaret, the Ankara representative of Koc Group.

In 1964, the company's headquarters was relocated to Istanbul, and Koç assumed the role of Chief Coordinator, moving to the Turkish capital. In 1970, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Executive Committee, and five years later, he became the Chairman of the Board. In 1980, Koç became the Chairman of the Management Committee for Koc Holding and skillfully led the organization until April 4, 2003, when he passed the reins to his eldest son, Mustafa Koç. Currently, Rahmi Koç serves as the Honorary Chairman of Koc Holding.

The company now accounts for over five percent of Turkish exports, generating annual revenues of $12 billion and providing employment for forty thousand people.
