Biography of Raisa Gorbacheva

Raisa Maksimovna Gorbacheva, the wife of Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, was born on January 5, 1932, in the city of Rubtsovsk, Altai Krai. She graduated from the Philosophy Faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov in 1957. In 1955, after completing university, she moved with her husband to his hometown in Stavropol Krai, where they lived for 23 years. Raisa taught at a local school while simultaneously working on her dissertation.

Academic Career and Public Service

In 1976, the Gorbachev family moved to Moscow. Before 1985, when Mikhail Gorbachev became the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Raisa Gorbacheva taught at Moscow State University. Later, she focused solely on public service and held positions such as Deputy Chairman of the Culture Foundation and a member of the Presidium of the Board of the Soviet Culture Foundation. She also served as the Chairperson of the "Hematologists of the World - For Children" association, which provided assistance to children with leukemia.

Controversy and Legacy

Upon appearing on television screens, Raisa Gorbacheva sparked intense curiosity among men and strong disapproval among women throughout the Soviet Union. Many believed she changed her outfits too frequently and spoke too much. Her precise and articulate style of speech was also criticized. However, after Mikhail Gorbachev's resignation, it became evident that she had set a remarkably high standard for being Russia's first lady.

Passing and Legacy

On September 20, 1999, at around 3 am local time (6 am in Moscow), she passed away in the university clinic of the German city of Munster. She died of leukemia at the age of 67. News of her illness spread quickly, with radio stations reporting updates on her health, and the "Gorbachev Foundation" receiving numerous sympathetic letters and telegrams.
