Rajwant Kaur: From Clubfoot to Confidence

A Life Transformed:

Rajwant Kaur, an 18-year-old hailing from a humble village in Punjab, India, was born with severe clubfoot and eight toes. This debilitating condition hindered her mobility, lowered her self-esteem, and made daily tasks challenging. Her family's financial struggles prevented them from seeking treatment until a groundbreaking surgery changed everything.

Octoplus Clubfoot Surgery:

Dr. Rattan Lal Mittal, an 80-year-old orthopedic surgeon, performed the unprecedented "Octoplus Clubfoot" surgery in August 2022. He removed the deformed part of Rajwant's foot, along with the extra toes, and realigned the remaining ones. The surgery had a profound impact on her physical health, preventing further damage to her joints and other limbs.

Post-Surgery Journey:

Months of physiotherapy were necessary for Rajwant to recover fully post-surgery. However, for the first time, she could wear shoes specifically designed for her needs. Despite the 6.35 cm leg length discrepancy, which will be addressed through future procedures, Rajwant's mobility and confidence soared.

Clubfoot: Causes and Treatment:

Clubfoot is a congenital deformity characterized by inwardly rotated feet and ankles. The exact cause is unknown, but genetics may play a role. Early treatment is crucial, involving gentle physical manipulations and progressive casting within two weeks of birth. In severe cases, surgery or procedures like the Ilizarov technique may be necessary to correct the deformity.

The Ilizarov Technique:

Named after Russian surgeon Dr. Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov, this technique involves cutting the outer part of the bone and inserting a stretching device. By gradually adjusting the device, new bone cells are formed, allowing for limb lengthening of up to 5.08 cm per month.
