Early Life and Military Service
Ralph Parr was born in 1924 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Inspired by his father, a naval aviator, he enlisted in the US Army Reserve in 1942. In 1944, he earned his wings as a fighter pilot and flew the P-38 in the Pacific theater during World War II.
Korean War and Ace Status
After the war, Parr returned to active duty and deployed to Korea twice. In 1953, he flew the F-86 Sabre and became an ace in just 11 combat missions. Over seven weeks and 47 sorties, Parr shot down 10 enemy aircraft, including two on June 30th, for which he earned the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC). On the last day of the war, he intercepted and downed an Il-12 transport aircraft, marking the final air victory of the Korean War.
Vietnam War and Distinguished Service Cross
Parr served two tours in Vietnam. During the Siege of Khe Sanh in 1968, he received the Air Force Cross (AFC) for destroying multiple enemy positions while flying a damaged aircraft. The Marines had recommended him for the Medal of Honor, but the Air Force chose to award him the AFC instead.
Post-Military Career
After the war, Parr held various staff positions and served as the chief of staff for the advisory mission in Iran. In 1976, he retired from the Air Force with the rank of colonel after suffering a severe injury during an inspection of Hurricane-damaged Eglin Air Force Base.
Recognition and Legacy
Parr's distinguished career included over 600 combat sorties, 10 air victories, and numerous awards, including the DSC, AFC, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit (3), Distinguished Flying Cross (10), and Air Medal (approximately 40). He remained engaged with military history and spoke of the mutual respect between pilots on both sides of the Korean War.
