Early Life
Ramy Youssef is an Egyptian-American comedian, actor, writer, and director born in the Queens borough of New York City. He later grew up in New Jersey. His father became the manager of the Plaza Hotel in New York City ten years after emigrating from Egypt. Youssef was raised in a Muslim family, observes Islamic holidays, and is a practicing Muslim. He attended Rutherford High School in Rutherford, New Jersey. Youssef then went on to study political science and economics at Rutgers University–Newark but dropped out before graduating to attend the William Esper Studio to focus on acting.
Career
TelevisionYoussef's television debut came in the sitcom "Nick at Nite's See Dad Run," in which he had a starring role. During the show's run, Youssef shadowed the writer's room, an experience he would parlay into his own show in 2019. In 2017, Youssef appeared on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," where he performed stand-up comedy.
His television series "Ramy" debuted on Hulu on April 19, 2019, with 10 episodes. The show, in which Youssef plays the titular character, tells the story of a millennial Muslim American second-generation born to immigrant parents in the United States. Soon after the first season's debut, Hulu renewed it for a second season, which premiered in 2020. Youssef won a Golden Globe in January 2020 for the role and was also nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards as both an actor and director.
Other Work
In June 2019, Youssef starred in his first HBO comedy special, "Ramy Youssef: Feelings." Alongside Mo Amer, Youssef co-created the American comedy-drama streaming television series "Mo," which premiered on August 24, 2022, on Netflix.
Following the debut of "Ramy," Youssef signed an overall television deal with A24. As of December 2019, he has two shows in development: one for Apple TV+ and one for Netflix.
