Early Life and Identity
Born in Augusta, Georgia, Symone D. Willis grew up in a devout Catholic family where community involvement was highly valued. She grappled with her gender and sexuality from a young age, enduring bullying and harassment throughout her childhood and adolescence. Identifying as gay in her teens, she eventually gained acceptance from both her peers and family.
College Experience and Activism
During her time at the University of Georgia, Willis's gender nonconformity subjected her to relentless discrimination. She realized her identity as a transgender woman and initiated her transition. Together with fellow students, she advocated against discrimination based on gender identity. Graduating in 2013 with a degree in journalism, Willis embarked on a journey of activism and advocacy.
Trans Advocacy and Leadership
After moving to Atlanta, Willis became actively involved in organizing with other transgender and gender-nonconforming people of color. She later relocated to Oakland and worked as a communications specialist and national organizer with the Transgender Law Center. As a speaker at the 2017 Women's March in Washington, D.C., Willis called attention to the fact that transgender women had been an afterthought in the march's initial planning. She has consistently spoken out on behalf of trans women, challenging discriminatory comments and advocating for their safety.
Media and Journalism
Willis's writing has appeared in publications such as The Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, and Autostraddle. She co-hosted the podcast "BGD" with Raquel Willis. In December 2018, she became the first trans woman to lead a publication when she was appointed as Executive Editor of Out magazine. Willis has used her platform to amplify the voices and experiences of transgender people.
Black Trans Flag and Other Contributions
Willis designed the Black Trans Flag, which incorporates a black stripe in the center of the Transgender Pride Flag. She has also worked on initiatives such as the Trans Obituaries Project. Willis's advocacy and contributions have earned her recognition, including the 2020 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Magazine Article.
Current Role
In June 2020, Willis joined the Ms. Foundation for Women as its Director of Communications. She continues to champion the rights and visibility of transgender women through her work and advocacy.
