Rhys's Battle with Cancer

Rhys Puddington was a British school boy who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of 6 in May 2008. Despite a valiant struggle and chemotherapy treatment that initially seemed successful, Rhys received another devastating diagnosis in 2012, revealing a liver tumor that was resistant to all known treatments.

Metastasizing Tumor

The tumor spread beyond Rhys's liver, affecting his bone marrow, rib cage, right femur, and left pelvis, with the expectation of further metastases to other organs. A new treatment option using a novel drug was offered, but Rhys and his mother declined.

"Beginning of the End"

In a poignant Facebook post titled "Beginning of the End," Rhys explained his reasons for choosing not to prolong his life with aggressive treatment. He recognized that the course of treatment would involve frequent hospital visits and debilitating side effects, and that it would not ultimately save his life.

Choosing to Live

Rhys's decision, while difficult to accept, was ultimately his own. He resolved to live out the remainder of his days with as much joy as possible, rather than languishing in endless treatments. His mother, Kay, understood that his decision was not a passive surrender but rather a choice to live his life to the fullest.

"Bucket List"

In January, Rhys compiled a "bucket list" of things he wanted to experience before his death. Among his wishes were meeting Johnny Depp, witnessing his mother learn to drive, and building a den in his backyard.

Outpouring of Support

Rhys's story touched the hearts of many kind-hearted individuals who expressed their desire to help him. Generous financial donations and heartwarming gifts poured in. While not everyone could offer financial assistance, Rhys received an abundance of well wishes and heartfelt messages on his Facebook page. A dedicated fundraising page raised nearly £5,000 to support him and his family during this difficult time.
