Early Life and Education

Rein Kruus, an Estonian literary scholar specializing in Russian literature, was born into a family of engineers and medical professionals in Tallinn, Estonia, as an only child. He graduated from the University of Tartu in 1982 under the tutelage of Sergey Isakov.

Academic Expertise

Kruus's primary focus of study was Russian literature produced in the interwar period of Estonia (1918-1940). He made significant contributions to the understanding of this literary era through his numerous publications and research.

Contribution to Literary Scholarship

Kruus played a vital role in preserving and disseminating Russian literary works penned in Estonia. He published 269 articles in various languages, including 25 dedicated to the Estonian period of Igor Severyanin's creative life. In 1989, he established a special section titled "Anthology of Russian Poetry in Estonia of the 1920s and 1930s" in the journal "Raduga."

Publications and Literary Critique

Beyond his focus on Russian literature, Kruus also published texts on other subjects. He released letters from prominent figures such as Vladimir Vernadsky and Ilya Repin. Moreover, he authored critical articles, including reviews of early works by the Russian writer Mikhail Weller.

Legacy

Tragically, Kruus passed away on April 25, 1992, after battling a severe illness. A memorial service was held in his honor at the Estonian Writers' Union. He was laid to rest in Tallinn's Metsakalmistu cemetery. Following his death, Kruus's archive was donated to the Estonian Literary Museum in Tartu, ensuring the preservation of his invaluable research.
