McCann was born into a modest family, with her father working as an insurance agent and her mother being a school teacher. In 1974, she enrolled at Northwestern University and graduated in 1987 with a degree in journalism. While she was offered the opportunity to pursue a master's degree, McCann instead chose to sign a contract with Leo Burnett Company, one of the largest advertising agencies in the United States.

McCann joined Leo Burnett Company in 1978 as a client service manager and steadily climbed the career ladder. She held various positions within the company, including media director and vice president.
