Biography of Rezo Esadze

Rezo Esadze is a Georgian and Russian director, screenwriter, and actor. He was born on February 18, 1934, in the village of Shemokmedi, Georgia. In 1956, he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Tbilisi University, specializing in geophysics. In 1964, he completed his studies at the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) under the guidance of M. Romm.

Early Career

From 1956 to 1958, Esadze worked as a physics and astronomy teacher at a school and as a junior researcher at the astrophysical station of Tbilisi University.

Film Career

In 1966, Esadze became a director at the Lenfilm studio, and from 1972, he worked at the Georgia-Film studio. He also served as the head of the +1 studio in Georgia. Throughout his career, he directed numerous films and contributed to the development of Georgian and Russian cinema.


Esadze was honored as a Merited Artist of the Georgian SSR in 1980. He received the Komsomol Prize of Georgia in 1982 for his outstanding contributions to the arts.
