Richard Baron, an American rock musician, is widely recognized as the lead singer of the band The Bongos. As a prolific artist, he has showcased his talents as a songwriter, arranger, author, director, and producer, releasing highly acclaimed solo albums and embarking on numerous tours.
Early Beginnings: The Littlest DJ
Born in Tampa, Florida, Baron began his musical journey at the tender age of seven as a radio disc jockey, earning the moniker "The Littlest DJ." His love for music continued to grow as he became the lead singer and songwriter for The Bongos, achieving critical acclaim. After the band's dissolution, Baron embarked on a successful solo career.
Solo Success: The Rolling Stone Era
Baron's debut solo album, "Cool Blue Halo," was released in 1987, receiving positive reviews from Rolling Stone magazine. He followed with two additional albums in the early 1990s: "Primal Dream" and "Primal Cuts," garnering further recognition from the prestigious publication.
Artistic Evolution and Literary Debut
Continuing his solo endeavors, Baron released "Clouds over Eden" (1993) and "Between Heaven and Cello" (1997), both earning critical praise from respected outlets like Rolling Stone. In 2000, he released the box set "The Big Three," after which he took a break from studio recordings until 2004.
The Bongos Reunited
In 2006, Baron reunited with former Bongos members in the studio to create a new rendition of their classic song "The Bulrushes." The same year, his candid and revealing memoir, "FRONTMAN: Surviving the Rock Star Myth," published with a cover photo by renowned photographer Mick Rock.
Recent Career Highlights
Baron's entire solo catalog became available on the iTunes Store in late 2007. His fifth album, "Glow," produced by Tony Visconti, was released in 2010. He has also contributed to television and collaborated with Matthew Billy on the successful radio single "The Sidewalks of New York" (2011). That same year, Baron began teaching and lecturing at the prestigious Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University, where he later became a professor.
Contemporary Projects and Accomplishments
Baron currently resides in Greenwich Village, New York City. He continues to tour extensively across the United States and holds the position of professor at New York University. In 2012, he joined the "Occupy This Album" project alongside notable artists such as Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, and Jackson Browne.
