Biography of Richard Fran Biegenwald

Early Life and Childhood

Richard Fran Biegenwald was born on August 24, 1940, in Rockland County, New York. He grew up in a troubled household, where he was frequently abused by his alcoholic father. At the age of 5, Richard set fire to his own home and was sent to the Rockland County Psychiatric Center for observation.

Crimes and Arrest

Between 1958 and 1983, Biegenwald committed a series of murders in Monmouth County, New Jersey, taking the lives of at least 9 people. He was also suspected of two other killings. Biegenwald's criminal activities came to an end on January 22, 1983, when the police surrounded his house while he was visited by Dherran Fitzgerald. Both Biegenwald and Fitzgerald were arrested. A search of Biegenwald's home revealed a large stash of weapons and drugs, including homemade bombs, firearms, and plans for local businesses.

The Confessions and Convictions

During questioning, Fitzgerald informed the police about a third victim, a young woman, whose body Biegenwald showed him. The killer had hidden the body in his garage. Fitzgerald also revealed that he had assisted Biegenwald in transporting another body to his mother's home in Staten Island and burying it in the basement. He admitted to stumbling upon the remains of yet another victim while digging the grave in the basement. Fitzgerald led the police to the burial sites of three more bodies, not counting those buried in Staten Island.

Trial and Sentencing

The police managed to gather enough evidence to charge Biegenwald with first-degree murder. Fitzgerald's testimonies played a crucial role in convicting the killer. In exchange for cooperating with the authorities, Fitzgerald was charged only with illegal possession of firearms and became an accomplice after the fact, resulting in a 10-year prison sentence. Fitzgerald was released from New Jersey State Prison in 1994.

Biegenwald was found guilty on all five counts of first-degree murder by a Monmouth County jury. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection, but this sentence was later overturned by an appellate court. Until his death, Biegenwald served four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole in a New Jersey state prison.

Death

Richard Fran Biegenwald passed away on March 12, 2008, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey. An autopsy revealed that the serial killer died from respiratory and renal failure.

Notable Victims

Some of Biegenwald's known victims include Stephen Sladowski, whom he shot and killed during an attempted robbery in Bayonne, New Jersey, in 1958. On November 1, 1981, he shot and dismembered Maria Ciallella, burying her remains in his mother's house. Deborah Osbourne was also killed by Biegenwald on April 8, 1982, and her body parts were buried in his mother's home. Anna Olesiewicz was shot four times in the head by Biegenwald on August 28, 1982, and her body was abandoned near a Burger King restaurant in Ocean Township, New Jersey.
