Early Life and Education
Richard LaGravenese was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a taxi driver. He graduated from New York University as an art history major.
Career Beginnings
LaGravenese began his writing career at the age of 30 with the screenplay for "Sudden Awakening."
Breakthrough with "The Fisher King"
His breakthrough came with the screenplay for "The Fisher King" (1991), which was acquired by Linda Obst and Debra Hill. They brought Terry Gilliam on board to direct the project.
Collaboration with Oscar-Nominated Directors
Following the success of "The Fisher King," LaGravenese signed contracts with multiple studios, giving him the right to work exclusively on A-list projects. He collaborated with Oscar-nominated directors such as Jonathan Demme, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, and Steven Soderbergh.
Directorial Debut and Austin Film Festival Award
In 2002, LaGravenese directed his first feature film, "Decade Under the Influence," which won the Austin Film Festival Audience Award for Directing.
