Rima Abdul Malak: A Trailblazing Cultural Minister
Early Life and EducationRima Abdul Malak, born on February 11, 1979, in Beirut, holds both Lebanese and French citizenship. At the age of ten, she moved with her family to France, settling in Lyon. There, she attended an international high school and the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po Lyon). Subsequently, she earned a DESS (Diplôme d'Études Supérieures Spécialisées) in International Development and Cooperation from the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.
Professional Career
Malak's career in cultural affairs began at CulturesFrance (later transformed into the French Institute) from 2007 to 2008. Subsequently, from 2010 to 2012, she served as head of the office of Christophe Girard, Paris' Deputy Mayor for Culture. This led to her appointment as Cultural Advisor to Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë until 2014. Malak's diplomatic experience includes serving as Cultural Attaché at the French Embassy in the United States (2014-2018).
Advising the President
In 2019, Malak became Cultural and Public Relations Advisor to President Emmanuel Macron. Her role involved advising on cultural matters and fostering relationships with various cultural organizations.
Minister of Culture
On May 20, 2022, Rima Abdul Malak was appointed Minister of Culture in Elisabeth Borne's government. As the head of the Ministry of Culture, she is responsible for supporting and promoting French culture both domestically and internationally. Malak's appointment marks a significant milestone, making her the first woman born in Lebanon to hold a ministerial post in the French government.
