Early Life and Education
Rinat Akhmetov was born and raised in Donetsk, Ukraine. Both his father and brother worked as miners in the city. After completing high school, Akhmetov enrolled in the Economics Faculty of Donetsk University in the early 1990s.
Business Career
In 1995, Akhmetov initiated the creation of Donetsk City Bank and became the youngest Ukrainian banker. By the late 1990s, he had become the most influential person in Donbass and the informal leader of the "Donetsk clan." He expanded his business interests through companies such as "System Capital Management," "Lux" firm, and "Donetsk City Bank."
Political Influence
Thanks to Akhmetov's influence, Viktor Yanukovych was appointed as the head of the administration of Donetsk Oblast in 1997. Akhmetov's empire includes various industries such as machine-building plants, metallurgical factories, insurance companies, media outlets, and football clubs. He also owns shares in mobile operators and breweries.
