Growing Up in SussexRob Gauntlett was born and raised in the town of Petworth in West Sussex, England. He attended Christ's Hospital School.
Conquering Mount Everest
In 2003, Gauntlett and his school friend James Hooper, both with no prior mountaineering experience, set out to climb Mount Everest. After training in Scotland, the French Alps, Spantik Peak in Pakistan, and Ama Dablam Peak in Nepal, they achieved their goal on May 17, 2006. At the age of 19, they became the youngest Britons to summit Mount Everest.
Cycling from Bilbao to Istanbul
In 2005, Gauntlett and Hooper embarked on another adventure, cycling from Bilbao, Spain, to Istanbul, Turkey.
180-Degree Expedition
From April 8, 2007, to October 9, 2008, Gauntlett and Hooper undertook an epic 180-degree expedition from the North Pole to the South Pole. They relied on human power and natural resources to raise awareness about global warming. They traveled by skis, dogsled, and boat to New York City, then cycled to Panama, sailed to Guayaquil, Ecuador, and cycled again to Punta Arenas, Chile. They sailed the final leg to Australia, completing a 22,000-mile journey. The expedition raised funds for The Prince's Trust.
Recognition and Award
In November 2008, Gauntlett and Hooper were named the National Geographic Society's "Adventurers of the Year."
Tragic End in the French Alps
On the morning of January 10, 2009, Gauntlett and his companion James Atkinson were found dead in the French Alps. It is believed they fell while climbing the ice face of Mont Blanc. Gauntlett was just 21 years old.
