Childhood and Early Life
Robert Fomin was born on July 5, 1968, in Baranovichi, Belarus. Soon after his birth, his parents divorced. Due to his mother's acquired deafness, he was raised by his hearing grandparents in a village from the age of six months. At the age of four, Fomin lost his hearing after surviving a near-fatal fire.
Education and Early Career
At the age of 14, Fomin's family passed away, leaving him an orphan. He then attended the Gorodeya Special Boarding School. Upon graduating, he moved to Siberia, where he worked at a factory while attending night school. He developed a passion for performing, participating in artistic activities and competitions.
Fomin then enrolled in the Cultural Studies and Education College in Barnaul. However, he soon transferred to the Altai Institute of Culture as a directing major. In 1992, his talent caught the attention of a representative from the State Specialized Institute of Arts (GSSI), who invited him to study in Moscow. He graduated from GSSI in 1997 and subsequently completed a postgraduate program at the Shchukin Theatre School.
Artistic Career
In 2000, Fomin joined the Mimicry and Gesture Theater and rose to the position of director two years later. He is also the theater's artistic director.
His debut as a director was the play "Pippi Longstocking," which combined musical theater, dance, mime, and acrobatics. Fomin has since directed and starred in numerous other productions at the Mimicry and Gesture Theater, including "The Innkeeper," "The Night Before Christmas," "The Nameless Star," "Dunno in Sunny City," "The Bremen Town Musicians," and "The Marriage of Don Juan."
Fomin collaborates with the youth collective "Angels of Hope" and has also directed concerts and show programs. He has acted in films such as "Country of the Deaf" and the television series "The Guardian Angel."
Personal Life
Fomin met his wife, Marina Muratova, at the first Beauty Contest for the Deaf in Russia in 1993. They married in 1993. Muratova has worked as a glassblower and a costume designer at the Mimicry and Gesture Theater. They have two hearing-impaired children, Martin and Kristina, who have excelled in swimming and handball, respectively.
Present Day
Fomin continues to perform and direct at the Mimicry and Gesture Theater. In 2024, he celebrated three years as director of the theater. He was also nominated for the Audience Choice Award at the "Star of Theatre" international award ceremony.
