Erich Lach (1885-1970) was an Austrian musicologist and professor.Early Life and Education
Erich Lach was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1885. He studied composition under the renowned Robert Fuchs.
Academic Career
In 1920, Lach became a professor at the University of Vienna. Four years later, he was appointed to the Vienna Academy of Music, where he remained until 1945. In 1927, he published his history of the Vienna Academy of Music, "Geschichte der Staatsakademie und Hochschule für Musik in Wien."
Publications
Lach was a prolific writer and published numerous works on music. His most notable publication is "Vergleichende Musikwissenschaft" (1924), a seminal work on comparative musicology. He also compiled the three-volume collection "Gesänge russischer Kriegsgefangener" (1926-1952), a collection of songs written by Russian prisoners of war.
Influence and Legacy
Erich Lach's teaching and scholarship had a profound influence on the field of musicology. Among his notable students were Kurt Wöss and Leopold Novak, who went on to become renowned musicologists in their own right.
Later Life
After retiring from teaching, Lach continued to write and publish until his death in 1970. He left behind a legacy as one of the most important musicologists of the 20th century.
