Robert Woolsey: An American Comic Genius
Early Life and CareerRobert Woolsey was born on August 14, 1888, in Oakland, California. His father's untimely death left his family in dire poverty. Woolsey worked as a jockey to support his family, but an injury ended his career. He became a bellhop at the Sinton Hotel in Cincinnati, where he discovered his comedic potential.
Vaudeville and Theater
Woolsey began his theatrical career in vaudeville, performing in both North America and the UK. He married dancer Mignone Park Reed in 1917 and wrote several plays. His breakthrough role came as Mortimer Pottle in W.C. Fields's hit Broadway show "Poppy" in 1925.
The Wheeler & Woolsey Era
In 1927, Woolsey joined Bert Wheeler in the Florenz Ziegfeld musical "Rio Rita." Their comedic chemistry was undeniable, and they quickly became one of the most successful duos of their time. They starred in 23 films together from 1928 to 1937.
Decline and Death
Woolsey's career was cut short by an incurable illness that struck in 1937. He passed away on October 31, 1938, at the age of 50, in Malibu, California. He was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.
Legacy and Family
Woolsey's legacy as a comedic genius lives on. His great-grandson, also named Robert Woolsey, has followed in his footsteps as an actor and writer. He resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
