Early Life and Career
John Reginald English was born in New Zealand in 1922. He developed a passion for chess at a young age and quickly rose to prominence within the New Zealand chess scene. In 1944 and 1945, he claimed the New Zealand Chess Championship.
International Success
In 1946, English relocated to England, where he continued to excel in the world of chess. In 1950, he earned the title of International Master and later became an International Arbiter in 1958. He played several key roles in the world of chess, including serving as a chess literary writer and participating in numerous international competitions.
Olympiads and Matches
English was an active participant in chess Olympiads, representing England in six different competitions between 1954 and 1962, as well as representing New Zealand in 1970. In 1954, he made a notable contribution to the match between the USSR and England, where he played on the third board. He also faced off against Ludwig Schmid in a memorable match in 1950, resulting in a 5:5 draw.
International Tournament Successes
