Early Life and Interests
Roberto Cofresí, known as "El Pirata Cofresí" in Puerto Rico, exhibited a fascination with sailing and maritime affairs from a young age. As he matured, the political and economic turmoil in Spanish-colonized Puerto Rico around 1818 likely influenced his decision to pursue a life of piracy.
Piracy and Spanish Response
Cofresí led several raids on ships carrying gold from the United States, and the local Spanish authorities initially tolerated his actions. However, in 1824, newly appointed governor Lieutenant-General Miguel Luciano was forced to take action due to international pressure.
Capture and Execution
The Spanish authorities organized an expedition to capture Cofresí, enlisting the ships "San José" and "Las Ánimas" under Spanish flags and the schooner "Grampus" under the US flag. On March 2, 1825, "Grampus" under Captain John Sloat engaged with Cofresí's schooner "El Mosqito" in a fierce exchange of fire. Cofresí attempted to flee but was captured. On March 29, 1825, after being found guilty by a court in San Juan, Cofresí and his crew were executed by firing squad.
