Roberto Heras

Roberto Heras began his professional cycling career in 1995 with the Kelme team. He achieved his first professional victory in 1996 at the Subida al Naranco. That same year, he won a stage in the Vuelta a España and followed it up with another stage win and a victory in the Clásica de Amorebieta in 1997.

Break Through Victories

In 1999, Heras took the third place overall in the Vuelta a España for the first time. The following year, he achieved even greater success, winning two stages and the overall classification in the same race.

Time with US Postal Service

From 2001, Heras raced for the US Postal Service team alongside Lance Armstrong. As a strong climber, he proved instrumental in helping Armstrong win the Tour de France several times. Heras' best result in the Tour de France was fifth place in 2005.

Vuelta a España Glory

Heras' first victory in the Vuelta a España came in 2000, followed by wins in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He became the first cyclist to win three consecutive editions of the race in 2003, equalling Tony Rominger's record.

Doping Scandal

In 2005, Heras again won the Vuelta a España, but his victory was stripped two months later after a drug test revealed the presence of EPO in his blood. He was banned from racing for two years as a result.

Retirement

Heras never returned to competitive cycling after serving his ban. He officially retired from the sport, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest Spanish and international cyclists of his generation.
