Robin Harris: Beloved Comedian and Actor

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Robin Harris was born in Chicago and relocated with his family to Los Angeles in 1961. While attending Manual Arts High School, he developed a passion for comedy. He honed his skills through open mic nights and worked various jobs to support his artistic aspirations.

Breakthrough and Rise to Prominence

Harris made his debut at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles in 1980. His old-school humor, reminiscent of Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor, quickly gained traction. He landed minor roles in films, including "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" (1988), "Do the Right Thing" (1989), and "Harlem Nights" (1989).

"Bebe's Kids" and Comic Genius

Harris's signature sketch comedy, "Bebe's Kids," featured his girlfriend Jamika's insistence on him babysitting her young son and three other rambunctious kids. The children would constantly prank and outwit Harris, claiming, "We Bebe's kids... we don't die... we multiply."

Film Adaptation and Posthumous Legacy

The Hudlin brothers planned a feature film adaptation of "Bebe's Kids," but Harris passed away during pre-production. Instead, the sketch was animated into a film directed by Bruce W. Smith, featuring the voices of Faizon Love, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Marques Houston, and others.

Untimely Demise and Enduring Impact

On March 18, 1990, Harris tragically passed away at the age of 36 due to cardiac arrhythmia. His untimely death shocked the comedy world. He was buried in a private mausoleum at Inglewood Park Cemetery.

In the wake of Harris's passing, "In Living Color" dedicated an episode to his memory. Posthumously, a DVD titled "We Don't Die, We Multiply: The Robin Harris Story" (2006) was released, featuring unseen footage of his performances and tributes from fellow comedians.

Robin Harris's legacy as a beloved comedian and actor continues to resonate today. His humor and wit brought joy to countless fans and his influence remains evident in the work of contemporary comedians.
