Roderick Gordon is a British author best known for his "Tunnels" series, co-written with Brian Williams.
Early Life and Influences
Roderick Gordon was born in Highgate, North London. His great-great-grandfather, William Buckland, was a renowned geologist and one of the founding fathers of the field. Gordon grew up fascinated by archaeology and paleontology. He found solace in writing and drawing during his childhood, publishing his first story in his prep school newspaper at age 12.
University and Career Path
Gordon studied genetics at University College London, where he met Brian Williams. The two became close friends and eventually co-founded a production company called Second Face, which produced a screenplay but never made a film.
After graduating without a clear career path, Gordon worked as a musician, filmmaker, and investment banker before being laid off in 2001. This event led him to reconnect with Brian Williams, and together they decided to work on a novel in 2003.
The "Tunnels" Series
The inspiration for the "Tunnels" series came from Gordon's wife, who suggested a book about secret tunnels under a school. Inspired by the rumored tunnels in his 16th-century home, Gordon and Williams began working on "The Highfield Mole" in 2005. The self-published novel caught the attention of Barry Cunningham, the publisher who discovered J.K. Rowling.
After extensive editing, "The Tunnels" was renamed and re-released in 2007, becoming a critical and commercial success. It sold over a million copies, was translated into multiple languages, and became a New York Times bestseller. The film rights were acquired by Relativity Media, with Mikael Håfström set to direct and Vincenzo Natali to produce.
Later Career
Gordon currently lives in Norfolk with his wife, two sons, and several chickens. He regularly visits London to get his hair cut. He continues to write and is involved in various literary projects.
