Biography of Rodrigue Tremblay

Rodrigue Tremblay is a Canadian economist and political scientist. He is currently a professor of economics at the Université de Montréal, where he specializes in macroeconomics, international trade, and finance. Tremblay is also known for his popular works on economics and politics.

Born in Matane, Quebec, Canada, Tremblay earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Université Laval in 1961 and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Montreal in 1963. He continued his education at Stanford University, earning a Master's degree in 1965 and a Ph.D. in Economics in 1968. Since 1967, Tremblay has been teaching at the University of Montreal, where he was appointed an honorary professor in 2002.

Tremblay has held various leadership positions throughout his career. He served as the president of the Canadian Economics Association from 1974 to 1975 and chaired the North American Economics and Finance Association from 1986 to 1987. From 1973 to 1976, Tremblay was the head of the Economics Department at the University of Montreal.

In addition to his academic career, Tremblay has worked as a professional consultant. He has provided his expertise to the Bank of Canada, the Economic Council of Canada, the West African Monetary Union, and the United Nations. Tremblay has contributed to a wide range of economic knowledge, with a particular focus on international economics and trade. His research has demonstrated the importance of short-term capital movements in balancing payment accounts and highlighted the role of economic and political disruptions in economic instability.

Tremblay's work on international trade and economic integration remains highly regarded. He directly influenced African currency policy as a consultant to the West African Monetary Union in 1970. In 1988, Tremblay headed a committee of Canadian economists involved in the free trade agreement negotiations between Canada and the United States.

Tremblay has also been active in researching and analyzing Canadian and global politics. His analytical works have been published in prestigious newspapers such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Globe and Mail, Le Devoir, La Presse, and Le Soleil.

In 1970, Tremblay proposed the creation of the North American Common Market, which was later realized in 1989 when Canada and the United States signed a free trade agreement. Mexico joined the agreement in 1994. From 1999 to 2004, Tremblay published four books on politics and geopolitics, including "Les grands enjeux politiques et économiques du Québec" and "Pourquoi Bush veut la guerre, Religion, politique et pétrole dans les conflits internationaux," which analyzed the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.
