Biography of Roman Dzindzichashvili
Roman Dzindzichashvili is an American chess player and grandmaster. He was born on May 5, 1944, in Moscow, Russia. In 1976, he moved to Israel and later settled in the United States in 1980.
Chess Achievements
Dzindzichashvili became the champion of Israel in 1978. In the US Championship of 1983, he secured a remarkable 1st to 3rd place tie with Walter Brown and Larry Christiansen. He represented the Israeli team in two Olympiads, in 1976 and 1978, and the US team in 1984.
Some of Dzindzichashvili's best results in international competitions include finishing 3rd to 4th in Geneva in 1977 and 1st to 4th in Netanya in the same year. He also achieved 1st place in Hastings in 1977-1978, 3rd to 5th in Amsterdam and Tilburg in 1978, and 1st place in New York in 1979 and 1984. Furthermore, he secured 1st to 5th place in Lone Pine in 1980, 4th place in Chicago in 1982, and 1st to 2nd place in Fort Worth in 1984.
Family
Dzindzichashvili comes from a talented family. His brother, Nodar Dzhin (Nodar Yakovlevich Dzindzichashvili, 1947-2002), was a writer. His other brother, Timur Yakovlevich Dzindzichashvili (known as Timur Dzhin), is a journalist, philosopher, and film producer/director who has worked with "Voice of America." His niece, Yana Djin (born in 1969), is a poetess.
Interesting Facts
In a cameo appearance, Dzindzichashvili appeared in the film "Searching for Bobby Fischer" in 1993.
