Early Life and Education
Roman Nikolaevich Verkhovsky was born on January 29, 1881, in Vilna (now Vilnius), Lithuania. He hailed from an ancient noble family from the Kostroma region in Russia.
Architectural Career in Russia
In 1911, Verkhovsky graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. He later fought in World War I and the Russian Civil War on the side of the White Army. Forced to emigrate, he left Russia in 1920 and settled in Yugoslavia.
Immigration to the United States
In 1937, Verkhovsky moved to the United States. In 1941, he was appointed architect-artist for the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in North America, overseeing the design of churches, chapels, and iconostases. He also engaged in church painting during this period.
Architectural Legacy in the United States
Verkhovsky designed over 25 churches and seven iconostases (six marble and one oak) in the United States. Six of these churches he painted himself.
Struggles and Demise
In his later years, Verkhovsky faced financial difficulties and suffered from a mental illness. He passed away in Long Island, New York.
