British Siamese twins successfully separated at Great Ormond Street Hospital
Identical twin girls, Rosie and Ruby Formosa, who were born conjoined at the abdomen, are preparing to start their first day of school after being successfully separated at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The twins' parents, Angela and Daniel Formosa, knew about their daughters' condition before they were born and were told by doctors that the chances of survival were slim. However, thanks to the expertise of the medical team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, the procedure to separate Rosie and Ruby was a success. Now four years old, the girls are excited about this new milestone in their lives.
A difficult pregnancy
During Angela's pregnancy, it was discovered at the 16th week that Rosie and Ruby had a high chance of not surviving. Even if they were born successfully, there was no guarantee they would survive the surgery to separate them. Angela recalls being scared and devastated by the news. She never imagined seeing her daughters go to school.
A successful separation
Rosie and Ruby were born at University College London Hospital, weighing approximately 2.3kg each, and were immediately transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital for emergency surgery. The five-hour procedure involved a team of 15 doctors who successfully resolved the life-threatening intestinal blockage. Three weeks after their birth, the girls were stable enough to go home.
A journey of hope and strength
Daniel, the twins' father, expressed his initial concerns about the slim chances of a positive outcome. He said that every day felt like a challenge after they learned that they had a one in a thousand chance of success. However, Rosie and Ruby proved to be amazing children, reaching new milestones with their unwavering determination.
A bright future ahead
Angela can hardly believe how quickly time flies now that her daughters are preparing to start school. The twins are excited about joining their older sister and cannot wait for all the school activities. Angela describes them as energetic and determined and says that they have always fought for their lives since they were in the womb.
The leading center for Siamese twins
Great Ormond Street Hospital is Europe's leading center for providing care to Siamese twins. It was here that the first successful separation surgery was performed in 1985. Since then, a total of 27 pairs of Siamese twins have been saved. The Formosa family is actively involved in supporting charitable programs at the hospital, including the "Back to School Campaign," which raises funds for the hospital's charity fund.
