The first black mayor in Ireland
Rotimi Adebari, a 43-year-old Nigerian immigrant, made history as the first black mayor in Ireland. He received the majority of votes in the town of Portlaoise, which is located 80 kilometers from the capital city of Dublin. Running as an independent candidate, Adebari garnered support from both right-wing and left-wing politicians.
A journey from Nigeria to Ireland
Adebari and his wife, along with their two children, fled Nigeria seven years ago due to religious conflicts in their homeland. However, Adebari was unable to prove that he personally faced persecution, and as a result, was initially denied citizenship in Ireland. It was only after the birth of their third child, when Ireland automatically granted citizenship to parents of children born on its territory, that Adebari finally received his citizenship. They now have four children.
Overcoming challenges in a new country
Upon arriving in Ireland, Adebari faced numerous challenges. He spent two years searching for employment before finally finding work at a local tennis club. He later established an organization called "Support for the Unemployed in County Laois." In 2004, Adebari surprised many by winning a seat on the municipal council. This newfound position brought him recognition and allowed him to open a consulting agency specializing in intercultural dialogue training for companies. Since then, he has also obtained a diploma from Dublin City University.
Embracing diversity in Portlaoise
According to Adebari, the residents of Portlaoise are completely indifferent to the skin color and religious beliefs of their neighbors. This inclusive and accepting community played a significant role in his successful mayoral campaign. As the first black mayor in Ireland, Adebari hopes to use his position to promote diversity and foster understanding among different cultural groups within the town.
