Premature Baby Born Without Intestines Defies Odds
In April 2018, Rowan Brays was born at 27 weeks gestation, weighing only 1 pound 6 ounces. Days later, he was diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a life-threatening condition in which the intestines are damaged.
Devastating Diagnosis
Doctors informed Rowan's parents, Daniel Brays and Jessica Novak, that their son's intestines were "completely unsalvageable." They were told that Rowan would either die or face a life of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), a method of providing nutrition through intravenous injections.
A Glimmer of Hope
Despite the grim prognosis, Daniel and Jessica refused to give up. They sought a second opinion from Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis in June 2018. There, a team of surgeons discovered that Rowan still had viable sections of intestine.
Successful Surgery
On June 2, 2018, Rowan underwent surgery. Surgeons removed a small portion of damaged intestine and several abscesses. They confirmed that Rowan had 71 centimeters of healthy intestine, which was sufficient to allow him to eat normally.
Long Road to Recovery
Rowan spent 209 days in the intensive care unit at Riley Hospital. During this time, he faced numerous challenges, including sepsis and multiple surgeries. However, he gradually gained strength and eventually weighed over 13 pounds.
Home at Last
On December 24, 2018, Rowan was finally discharged from the hospital and able to celebrate Christmas at home with his family. His parents were overjoyed to have their son back.
Ongoing Support
Daniel and Jessica continue to share Rowan's story to raise awareness about NEC and to support other families going through similar experiences. They have also set up a PayPal account to help cover Rowan's future medical expenses.
A Medical Miracle
Rowan's survival is a testament to the power of hope and perseverance. He has defied all odds and proven that even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome. As his parents said, "He's a true blessing from God."
