Roxana Maracineanu: Romanian-Born French Swimmer, Politician, and Minister
Early Life and Swimming Career
Roxana Maracineanu was born in Romania but her family fled to France in the early 1980s, seeking political asylum from the Ceausescu regime. At the age of nine, she began swimming and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1991, she became a French citizen and won her first national championship titles in backstroke.
Maracineanu's international success followed shortly. She won gold in the 200-meter backstroke at the 1998 World Aquatics Championships, becoming the first French swimmer to achieve this feat. At the 2000 Summer Olympics, she earned a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke and placed fourth in the 100-meter backstroke.
Retirement from Sports and Media Career
After failing to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics, Maracineanu retired from swimming in 2004. She turned to a career in media, providing commentary and analysis for sports programs on French television and radio. In 2010, she was elected to the Ile-de-France regional council as a member of the Socialist Party.
Political Appointment as Sports Minister
In 2018, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe appointed Maracineanu as Sports Minister in his second government. She focused on implementing programs to prevent water accidents and promote swimming education in schools. In 2020, she was made Minister-Delegate for Sports under Minister of National Education, Youth and Sports Jean-Michel Blanquer.
During the 2021 European Football Championship, Maracineanu urged French fans not to travel to Saint Petersburg for a quarterfinal match due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19. France ultimately lost in the penalty shootout and did not advance to the quarterfinals.
Post-Ministerial Career
In 2022, Maracineanu's ministerial appointment ended when the new government of Élisabeth Borne took office. She ran for parliament in the 7th district of Val-de-Marne but lost to the left-wing candidate Rachel Keke by a narrow margin.
Personal Life
Roxana Maracineanu is married to journalist Franck Ballanger and they have three children together.
