Roy Halston Frowick was born on April 23, 1932, in the town of Des Moines, Iowa. He received his higher education at Indiana and Chicago Universities, where he studied design and millinery. It was during this time that he chose to pursue a career in fashion design. In 1953, he opened his first hat shop in Chicago, catering to famous actresses and wealthy socialites. Among his regular clients were Gloria Swanson and Debra Kerr, and he even created hats for the renowned Jacqueline Kennedy.

In 1958, Halston began collaborating with the company "LILLY DACHE," with offices and stores located in New York. Soon, Halston hats found their place on the shelves of New York department stores such as "Bergdorf Goodman's."

Launching His Own Fashion Empire

In 1966, Roy Halston ventured into clothing design and decided to open his own business. In 1968, he founded the company "Halston Ltd." with its main office located on Madison Avenue in New York City. By the early 1970s, Halston had established himself as a talented fashion designer. His collections primarily focused on knit dresses, sweaters, and wide-leg trousers. His company also specialized in crafting turtlenecks, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, sweaters, coats, and jackets.

Acclaim and Success

Halston's designs gained recognition for their elegance and luxury, leading the American fashion industry to name him the best eveningwear designer. In the 1960s, he collaborated successfully with designer Stephen Sprouse for three years. In 1973, Simon Norton acquired a large stake in "Halston Ltd." and created the subsidiary company "Halston Enterprises Inc." As a result, the central office moved to the Olympic Tower building in New York.

The 1970s and Beyond

The 1970s brought Halston great popularity, and he frequented various society events and exhibitions. His close friends included Bianca Jagger and Liza Minnelli. In 1983, Halston signed a contract with the retail giant "J.C. Penney" to create more affordable and accessible clothing. However, this shift away from high-end fashion displeased some of his wealthy clients, causing them to turn away from him.

Roy Halston Frowick passed away on March 26, 1990, at the age of 58.
