Ludwig Ferdinand von Ranke was born in 1795 in Wiehe, Germany. He received his education at the Universities of Leipzig and Göttingen, where he studied history and philology.

Academic Career

After graduating, Ranke began his teaching career at a gymnasium in Berlin. He later became a professor of history at the University of Berlin, where he remained for the rest of his career.

Ranke was a prolific writer who produced numerous influential works on German and European history. His most notable works include:
