Early Career: Formula Ford and Formula 3
Born into a wealthy family, Derek Warwick's passion for motorsport began in 1974 when he competed in the British Formula Ford series. The following year, he moved to British Formula 3, where he won the BARC championship and finished runner-up in the ShellSport Formula 3 championship in 1976.
Formula 1 Debut and British Championship Triumph
In 1977, Warwick made his Formula 1 debut with Hesketh Racing. However, he failed to score any points in his first two seasons and moved to Surtees in 1978. In 1979, he returned to the British Formula 1 Championship, known as the Aurora series. Driving for Arrows, he captured the title with five victories.
Return to Formula 1 and Retirement
Warwick returned to Formula 1 in 1980 but again struggled to score points. He competed in 12 races between 1980 and 1982, failing to qualify five times. He subsequently switched to the World Sportscar Championship in 1983, finishing fifth at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 956.
Post-Racing Career
After participating in three CART races in 1985, Warwick retired from full-time racing. He made occasional appearances, including at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. Currently, he resides in the United States.
