Biography of Ruth Chatterton

Early Life

Ruth Chatterton, an American film and stage actress popular in the early 1930s, was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1893, in New York City. From a young age, she dreamed of a career in acting and at the age of fourteen, she left school to pursue the stage.

Theater Career

In 1911, Chatterton made her Broadway debut and had a successful theatrical career, appearing in fourteen productions over the course of ten years. Her talent caught the attention of renowned actor Emil Jannings in 1928.

Film Success

Her standout performance in a film directed by Jannings garnered public recognition and for the next few years, Chatterton actively pursued leading roles in movies. In 1930, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performances in two films, "Sarah and Son" and "Madame X".

Famous Co-Stars

Chatterton starred alongside popular actors of the time, such as Paul Lukas in films like "The Right to Love", "Dodsworth", and "Unfaithful". She also acted with her second husband, George Brent, in movies like "Crash", "Woman", and "Lily Turner". Other notable co-stars include Clive Brook in "Charming Sinners" and "No Other Woman", and Frederic March in "Female" and "Sarah and Son".

Later Life and Legacy

Starting in 1934, Chatterton's film career began to decline. Her last significant film role was in the 1936 melodrama "Dodsworth" based on Sinclair Lewis' novel. In 1938, she retired from acting and moved to the United Kingdom, where she spent many years. In her later years, she wrote several books and made a television appearance in 1950, playing Gertrude in an adaptation of "Hamlet". On November 24, 1961, Chatterton passed away from a brain hemorrhage. She was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life

Ruth Chatterton was married three times. Her first husband was actor Ralph Forbes, whom she married in December 1924. They divorced on August 12, 1932, and the following day, Chatterton married her co-star from the film "Crash", George Brent. However, they also divorced after two years. In her later years, Chatterton married for the third and final time to a man named Barry Thompson. They were married for eighteen years, until Thompson's death in 1960.
