Hamit Muhametkulov: A Bashkir Poet and Folklorist
Hamit Muhametkulov was a prominent Bashkir poet and improvisational sessen. His literary and cultural contributions have left a lasting legacy in Bashkir folklore.
Early Life and Education
Muhametkulov was born into a peasant family renowned for their knowledge of Bashkir folklore. From 1900 to 1911, he pursued his education at the medreses in the villages of Ravilovo and Sterlitamak.
Military Service and Career
Muhametkulov served in World War I, an experience that deeply influenced his later writings. After the war, he became a schoolteacher and later worked in the Burzyansky district's land department during the 1930s.
Imprisonment and Death
In 1934, Muhametkulov was arrested and sentenced to a prison camp. Tragically, he perished during his imprisonment.
Literary Contributions
Despite the suppression of his work, a small collection of Muhametkulov's poems has survived through oral transmission among the people of the Burzyansky district. In addition, a notebook containing his writings was discovered in the village of Abdulmambetovo in 1979.
Most notably, Muhametkulov documented the Kipchak version of the epic poem "Kusiak-Bi." His recordings preserved an invaluable part of Bashkir folklore.
