Early Life and CareerSammy Kahn, born Samuel Cohen on June 18, 1913, in the Lower East Side of New York City, was an American lyricist, songwriter, and talented musician. He was the only son among five children in a family of Polish Jewish immigrants. Sammy began his creative journey in the 1930s, where he excelled as a violinist in a popular orchestra. He soon collaborated with Sol Chaplin, and together they formed the duo Cahn and Chaplin, creating exceptional music and poetic themes for various leading companies in need of their talents.
Hollywood and Broadway Success
In 1940, Kahn made his way to Hollywood and began writing songs for films. He also worked for Broadway theaters, crafting exquisite lyrics for musicals such as "High Button Shoes," "Two's Company," "Skyscraper," and the puppet show "Les Poupees de Paris." In 1955, he expanded his horizons and became involved in publishing, taking on the role of a music editor. In 1972, Kahn was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and later became the head of the organization, showcasing not only his creative talents but also his organizational abilities. In 1988, the prestigious Sammy Awards, recognizing exceptional composers of film music, were established. Upon learning about the award, Kahn was honored and considered it a great privilege.
Award-Winning Career
Sammy Kahn's creative work was highly acclaimed. As a unique lyricist and songwriter, he received twenty-six Oscar nominations, winning four of them for the songs "Three Coins in the Fountain," "High Hopes," "All the Way," and "Call Me Irresponsible." Additionally, he was nominated three times for the Broadway Tony Award.
Personal Life and Legacy
Sammy Kahn was married twice in his lifetime. His first marriage was in 1945 to Gloria Delson, with whom he had two children. He remarried in 1970 to Virginia Bazil. Sammy passed away on January 15, 1993, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 79. To this day, his star shines brightly on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in the hearts of his numerous fans.
