Biography of Sandra Cretu

Sandra Cretu, a renowned music artist, was born on May 18, 1962, in Saarbrucken, Germany. Her parents, Karin and Robert Lauer, were of German and French descent, respectively. Sandra grew up sharing a room with her older brother Gaston, who was two years older than her. Their room was adorned with posters of David & Shaun Cassidy and a collection of albums.

At the age of ten, Sandra started taking guitar lessons from a music teacher who lived on the same street as her family. By the age of twelve, she was already certain that she wanted to become a singer. She surprised everyone with her beautiful rendition of Olivia Newton-John's song at a children's song contest.

In 1976, at the age of fourteen, Sandra was discovered by producer George Roman, who recorded her first single, "Andy main freund" ("Andy, my friend"). At this time, Sandra already had four years of guitar playing experience and had trained in classical ballet, performing in the Saarbrucken city theater.

In 1979, Sandra's parents signed a contract for her to join the female trio "Arabesque" as their lead vocalist. From 1979 to 1985, they gained significant popularity in Japan, comparable to ABBA in Europe. However, they did not achieve the same level of success in Germany, despite some appearances on German television.

After the breakup of "Arabesque" in 1985, Sandra started her solo career with the song "Japan ist weit" ("Japan is Far") which was a German version of Alphaville's "Big in Japan". Encountering moderate success with this single, Sandra began collaborating with her friend Michael Cretu, whom she had met during her time with "Arabesque". Michael Cretu had been an arranger and composer for the group "Boney M" since 1977. They formed a talented team, including Peter Kent, Peter Cornelius, and other artists.

In 1985, Sandra released her first solo single, "Maria Magdalena", which was written by Hubert Kemmler. The song became a huge success, reaching the top of the charts in 21 countries, from South America to Egypt. Subsequent to the success of the single, Sandra released her first solo album, "The Long Play".

Over the years, Sandra released several more albums, including "Mirrors" in 1986, "Paintings in Yellow" in 1990, and "Fading Shades" in 1995. She also participated in Michael Cretu's project, ENIGMA, providing female vocals for some of their songs. Sandra continued to perform concerts and remained active in the music industry.

In 1988, Sandra married Michael Cretu, and they currently reside in Ibiza, Spain. They have two children, named Nikita and Sebastian.
