Biography of Sandy Baron
Sandy Baron, an American comedian who performed in theater, film, and television, was born as Sanford Beresofsky on May 5, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York. He changed his real name while studying at Brooklyn College and began his career working at a resort in the Catskill Mountains. In the late 1950s, Sandy joined the improvisational comedy group "Compass Players," which consisted of many college dropouts from the University of Chicago.
Stage and Screen Career
Baron made his Broadway debut in 1962 in the play "Tchin-Tchin." Throughout his career, he frequently found himself on the Broadway stage, appearing in both successful productions and unsuccessful projects, including "Generations" and the Los Angeles version of "Lenny." Later in his career, Baron replaced Cliff Gorman as Lenny Bruce in the Broadway version of "Lenny."
During the television season of 1966-1967, Sandy became a star alongside Will Hutchins in the NBC sitcom "Hey, Landlord." He appeared in numerous other television projects, including a notable role as Jack Klompus in the sitcom "Seinfeld," portraying Mike Lucia in the crime drama series "Law & Order," and appearing in the family TV comedy "The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas" in 1996.
In Woody Allen's 1984 film "Broadway Danny Rose," Baron, along with other contemporaries, played himself in one of Allen's most poignant comedies. He also served as the narrator in the film. His best-known film performances include the war drama "Birdy" and the musical biopic "Sid and Nancy" directed by Alex Cox, starring Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb.
Legacy and Death
Sandy Baron passed away from emphysema on January 21, 2001, in Van Nuys, San Fernando Valley, Southern California. He was laid to rest at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City.
